Shannon Peake, Ph.D., is Co-Director of Implementation at the Center for Translational Neuroscience at the University of Oregon. His research looks at the influence of parenting and social factors on children's brain and behavior development. The research, informed by recent advances in neuroscience, instructional design, and cultural adaptation, is then used to develop programs to support early childhood professionals and parents and caregivers of young children.


Sh. Zakareeya Baksh

Sh. Zakareeya loves to augment his courses with new research. Well-versed in classical literature and having memorized the Quran, he brings the heritage of Islam to students in the modern context.
Sh. Zakareeya loves to connect with his students while teaching and creates an interactive experience during his sessions.
He graduated from the International Open University with Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Islamic Studies.
He currently serves as a resident scholar at NYC Muslim Center - NY.


Zuha Mirza

Zuha Mirza is a dedicated educator with over 12 years of education experience focused on curriculum design, teaching, creating learning strategies and programs leveraging digital platforms.
With a Master's in Education, she has been able to develop meaningful, relevant learning programs using sound pedagogical methods for early childhood and K 12 education.
Her Character Education and Qur'an Curriculum have been adopted by various Islamic institutions.

Session 1: Building Your Child's Communication

  • Language skills and brain development in young children.
  • Why communication practice is important at very young ages (birth to age 5).
  • Practical and easy ways to strengthen communication skills for your child.   

Session 2: Children's Patience Skills

  • Research on the development of patience.
  • Skills related to patience in young children: self-regulation and attention.
  • Why small improvements in patience lead to faster skill building for young children.


Session 3: Helping Your Child Manage Big Emotions

  • Stress response and emotion regulation development in early childhood.
  • Why talking about emotions makes them easier to manage.
  • How to help young children deal with anxiety, sadness, or anger (or all 3!)

Session 4: Developing Children's Generosity

  • How the value of generosity emerges in children.
  • Why generosity helps children (hint: it's not about money).
  • Strategies to help children be naturally generous toward others.


Session 5: How Your Child Learns Truthfulness

  • Understanding the age most children begin to understand truthfulness and lying.
  • Different reasons that young children lie and how to respond.
  • How to build the value of truthfulness.
  • Prosocial lies and what to do about them.

       

Session 6: Social Interaction Skills For Your Child

  • How children learn to act with other adults and children.
  • Social skills that help children when they get to school.
  • Activities in your home that help build strong social skills.
